劳格文(John Lagerwey),法国汉学家、宗教史和民族志学者,研究兴趣为道教、中国宗教、地方社会史等,曾任法国远东学院(EFEO)研究员、法国高等研究实践学院(EPHE)“道教和中国宗教史”讲席教授,现为香港中文大学中国研究中心讲座教授,著有Taoist Ritual in Chinese Society and History(1987)、China.A Religious State(2010),编有(与人合作)Early Chinese Religion I and II(Brill,2009,2010)、Modern Chinese Religion I and II(Brill,2014,2015)等书。
我在密歇根大学念本科时读的是英文文学,后来在莱顿转到中国古典文学,最后在哈佛大学做博士论文,开始研究《吴越春秋》[1],时在1968年。我的指导老师海陶玮(James Robert Hightower,1915-2006)是古代文言文研究,尤其是陶渊明研究方面的专家。他很早的时候就写过《中国文学论题:概览与书目》[2],里面就介绍了所有先秦和汉朝的文献,然后我就在他那本小册子里面找到了《吴越春秋》。这个文本有很多版本方面的问题,因此我花了很多时间,主要是利用《太平御览》等类书来做考证工作,并在此基础上进行文本翻译。我当时只知道《吴越春秋》的编撰利用了《左传》、《吕氏春秋》、《国语》等文献,根本不清楚它和道教或宗教有任何关系。
我从那时开始研究《无上秘要》,考察里面的仪式,试图了解道教仪式的历史。施舟人和傅飞岚(Franciscus Verellen)主编的《道藏通考》[11]中有关南宋道教类书的部分大都是我撰写的。这项工作我在1982年前就已经做好了。我唯一没有碰的大类书是《道法会元》,因为当时已经有龙彼得(Pier van der Loon,1920-2002)的研究。[12]1980年,我到台湾做《无上秘要》的校对,先在台中工作了两个礼拜,然后就跑到台南去找陈荣盛。他那时刚好准备去台东打醮。我便跟着去了。我1987年出版的那本书[13]中关于醮的部分描述的基本就是我在台东看到的那场醮。之后,我还去观看了其他法师做的小法事,探访了台南的一个吴姓老道长。从此以后,我基本是每年都去台湾待六个星期。我一边写那本书,一边搜集、复印陈荣盛的所有手抄本,了解他们所做法事的整个过程,分析其中的每个仪式。大概在1983年,我利用范华(Patrice Fava)的一台当时很笨重的录象机,还请道士挂着麦克风,做了很认真的录像和录音记录。如此,我便可以仔细比照科仪本和仪式的实际展开,最终写出了那本书。
